The Future is Bright

Last Saturday night a new generation of Hollywood leaders kept a tradition alive – they came together – 500 men and woman from all aspects of the film and television business – to honor the MPTF’s mission of “caring for our own” at the Reel Stories/Real Lives event sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter.

Hosted by Robert Downey Jr., the program included six stories of industry members helped through the Fund’s various programs and services. Each story was written by a leading writer including Will Fetters, Dan Fogelman, Scott Frank, Michele & Kieran Mulroney, John Requa & Glenn Ficarra, and Chris Weitz and presented by John Goldwyn, Jodie Foster, Jennifer Garner, Robert and son Chris Pine, Nick Offerman, and Josh Brolin with a special reading by Russell Brand. The stories were heartfelt and clearly demonstrated what Roddy McDowell once described as a noble notion – the idea that a single industry made it their purpose to care for its own by creating MPTF 90 years ago.

What made the night very special for those of us who have been at the Fund for a while was the age of the attendees. Since the night also celebrated THR Next Gen Class of 2011 – 35 leaders under 35-years of age, it was a young crowd and many were hearing about MPTF for the first time. And based on the emails we have received and the number of attendees who have already signed up to volunteer and get involved, the message obviously resonated as it has for the generations before them.

As Robert Downey Jr. said on Saturday night – it is our turn to provide the leadership to keep that tradition of care alive through the support of MPTF. If Saturday night is any indication, the future is very bright.

It’s great to see young adults stepping up to the plate and caring for others.  Hopefully this will spread like wild fire and we’ll get back to the thought process of thinking about others more than oneself.

This was an amazing event, and a very special evening. I am glad that TNG has the opportunity to see first hand the wonderful things that MPTF does for the industry members we serve.
